How to Transfer a .co.uk domain
- You will need to contact your existing registrar and request that they change your IPS-TAG to Jon Web Design’s, which is PLANETDOMAIN-AU. This can usually only be completed by the registrar.
- Contact Jon Web Design via support@jonwebdesign.com.au to add the record.
- When we confirm that the domain name has been pushed to PLANETDOMAIN-AU, we will create a record in our system.
Please note that with .uk domain transfers, a request for authorisation email is NOT required. If you have any questions, or if require advice, contact our support team on 0409 790 593, or email support@jonwebdesign.com.au
Note: If you are transferring a domain name from another provider there are a number of domain rules that you should know before proceeding, as they do have a bearing on the transfer eligibility of a domain.
- Check that the domain name is unlocked with the current registrar.
- If the domain name is a .com, .net or other gTLD you must be sure that the domain is at least 60 days past the registration date and last transfer.
- Check that the registrant email is correct, and that your customer has access to it so they can accept the transfer authorisation email.
Domain Name Transfer Duration
The time it takes to transfer a domain is dependent upon the type of domain name, or when the owners authorise its transfer. Please see the table below for a rough guideline:
Domain Extension | Time to Transfer |
.au | 2 days |
.com / .net / .org / .info / .biz | 5-7 days |
.nz | 1 day |
.co.uk | 5-7 days |
The below article outlines how to transfer a .au domain name to Jon Web Design. See the changing ownership of .au domain names article if you wish to transfer ownership of a .au domain.
Approving the .au domain transfer
Once a request has been made to transfer the .au domain to Jon Web Design, an email will be sent to the registrant contact email address of the domain (this email can take 1-2 hours to be sent). You can check what the current registrant contact email address is for your .au domain at AusRegistry’s website. If you do not currently have access to this email address, you must contact your current registrar and request that they update your domain registrant contact email address. To proceed with the transfer, you must click an approval link that is sent to the registrant contact email address. Once clicked, the process of transferring the domain begins. It generally takes 48 hours from the moment the link is clicked for the .au domain to be transferred to Jon Web Design.
Transfer Checklist for .com/.net/.org/.info/.biz Domain Names
Perform a whois search on the domain name you wish to transfer and complete the following steps.
1. Ensure the domain name is not within 60 days of the initial registration or a previous registrar transfer
Domain names cannot be transferred within the first 60 days of being registered, or within 60 days of being transferred from another registrar. Some registrars have security measures in place which do not allow the transfer of a domain name within 60 days of an update of registrant information. You will need to check with your existing registrar to see if this applies to your domain.
2. Domain name is in ACTIVE / OK status
To successfully transfer a domain, it must have an “ACTIVE” status. If the status is “locked”, you will need to have the domain un-locked through your existing registrar. If your domain’s status is “ON HOLD” (e.g. non-payment or dispute) or “REDEMPTION PERIOD” you will not be able to transfer the domain. Jon Web Design recommends submitting your domain name transfer order at least 7 days before an expiration date. If the domain name expires during the transfer process, the DNS will stop working. Therefore, any website and/or email service you have for this domain will not work until the transfer has been completed.
3. Administrative contact’s email address is correct, up to date, and you can access messages sent to it
The Administrative whois contact for your domain must authorise transfers. During a transfer, an “Authorization for Registrar Transfer” email is sent to the administrative email address. Check your whois report to ensure that the Administrative Contact email address is one you have access to – if this address is inaccurate or inaccessible, update it with your existing registrar before submitting a domain transfer request. If you do not respond to the “Authorization for Registrar Transfer” email, your domain cannot be transferred.
4. Obtain the domain authorisation code (EPP Password) from current registrar
The .ORG, .BIZ, .INFO, .COM & .NET Registries require an Authorisation Code (sometimes called AUTH CODE, AUTHINFO, AUTH or EPP Code) to approve domain name transfers. Obtain this code from your current registrar before submitting a domain transfer, otherwise your domain will not be able to be transferred. You will need to enter the EPP code at the time you respond to the “Authorization for Registrar Transfer” email (which is sent to the administrative whois contact for your domain).
5. Credit card details are valid for renewal of domain. Upon completion of transfer, the domain is renewed for 1 year (or however many years you have renewed it for)
Once you have completed the above steps, you'll be able to submit a transfer request to transfer the registration of your domain name to Jon Web Design.
